A piano concerto is a composition in which a solo piano (or harpsichord) is accompanied by a large ensemble of other instruments (usually a full orchestra but not always). This list looks at 10 of the greatest (with an additional bonus entry from JFrater). The criteria for inclusion and ranking of entries are musical artistry, technical artistry, pianistic power, balance between piano and orchestra, and historical influence.

In her recent series, Megan Greene subverts and recontextualizes traditional Audubon bird prints, having long incorporated naturalist studies and images of flora and fauna in her work.

In these intricate hybridizations she explores shifts between the found vs. altered, drawn vs. photographic, representational vs. abstract, and the beautiful vs. the grotesque. Her transformations dissolve, evolve and re-conceive the original hijacked images to become something known yet fully new.

Martin Klimas is an awesome photographer. For this series, Martin splatter different colors of paint on a speaker and cranked up the volume. The vibrations from the speaker sent the paint sky high in patterns. For each image, Klimas selected a specific type of music, typically something dynamic and percussive, like Miles Davis or Kraftwerk.

For this series, Klimas spent six months and about 1,000 shots to produce the final images from his studio in Düsseldorf, Germany.
